Today I explained to fifth grade that they will be writing a post about their PPL energy conservation kit, explaining what they learned from the kit and how they are putting energy saving measures into practice at home. In the past we have used images from the Internet that related to the topic but this year we would like students to take an actual photo of something they are using from the kit. We brainstormed some ideas in class today, such as putting a CFL bulb into a lamp, or the newly installed shower head, or old and new shower head side by side, etc. They can use their imaginations and be creative but the main rule is that no faces should be in the photos. A hand holding a device is fine, but we are not including any personally identifiable images.
We also discussed ways to make the photo accessible in school for the writing assignment. If you use a digital camera and download the image to your computer from a camera card, it can be either emailed to me as an attachment or it can be uploaded to the student's Google Drive account. They need to log into their account, click the upload arrow, and the image will be transferred to their cloud storage for future use.
The student can also email it to his/her own Gmail account as an attachment, but students can only send and receive mail within the olphbeth.org domain. They could not accept an email from your personal account with an attachment. Students may also upload more than one image and decide later which one best suits the focus of their paragraph. Please feel free to contact me if you have any questions. There is no deadline set yet for the writing assignment but it would be great if photos would be available to the students by next Monday's class (November 11).
