Happy New Year! We began the new year with our class on January 5 where I first explained to the students how their participation score was calculated for the Hour of Code activity. In reality I would like to have had it be an ungraded activity in which students could work at their own pace (which they did), but since grades are a necessary evil, they received a participation score based on completing the first two stages (G) and additional credit for working beyond that. Students who had missed some classes due to illness or vacations could make up some time to receive credit.
After that we went on to our new topic of using the drawing tools in MS Word. I demonstrated and students practiced: using shapes and textboxes, formatting the line and fill colors, layering objects, using scribble and free form shape tools, nesting, and grouping and ungrouping objects. This is all in preparation for the health poster in which they will take their already completed sketch and turn it into a digital poster using the drawing tools. Students will then share the posters on their blogs. I showed students the tile on the webmix (Creative Space 1) that would be the activity they needed to complete on Monday, January 12, which is a graded assignment and said they could even practice at home if they have access to MS Word.
