We are beginning the third quarter this week and I wanted to do a re-cap of the second quarter before we move on to new things.
In the first quarter students all received a G for their quarter grade and my explanation was given previously. This quarter, they earned their individual grade based on their completion of the My Mark on the World activity. We went over the steps of the assignment many times and I moved around helping students as they completed it. For some there was still a lot of guidance needed. They then received a checklist paper for them to go item by item and check off each item as they saw that it had indeed been completed. Some students, however, were still missing some of the steps.
Because of weather delays and spending time on the Hour of Code (2 class periods) and the holidays, that was the only graded assignment for the quarter. Students also received a 10/10 participation grade for completing the coding activity. We used Hopscotch on the iPads to complete the coding activity and also watched a great video, Code Stars.
We have begun a state project which will involve researching information about an assigned state, and putting that information into a Google Doc. We have started this together and so far have found the area, size rank, time zone, date of admission to statehood, capital, and nickname for the state. The resources we are using are found here, which is a tile on our class webmix. We will continue to gather information on the research document and then display the state information in a digital poster.
