9/28/2013 September 28, 2013Two grades have been entered to date, and following a few simple directions was enough for many people to earn 100 percent of the points. In prepping for the Genius Hour project students did a brainstorming list (actually 3 lists of ten items) to get them to think about what was important to them. That was followed by proposing three possibilities for the Genius Hour project. I met with most students individually to discuss their choices. September 24 was our first Genius Hour (genius class) session where students worked solely on researching their topic. I introduced them to the Google Research function which allowed them to research, link, and cite sources within their Google Doc. They also are working on developing an "essential question" for the focus of their research. I explained the concept of essential question and gave them examples such as "What is AIDS?" is NOT an essential question because in your research you would simply transfer information from one or more websites to your report but not use the information in any way. The question "Which major disease should be the focus of our research dollars?" is the kind of question that causes a student to not only find out information about the diseases but weigh the impact by analyzing and evaluating, which are higher level thinking skills. The next Genius Hour class is scheduled for October 22, but students are free to add to their research document at any time before then. October 1 is the date to finish the MS Word document that demonstrates special table formatting of chosen data. Comments are closed.
