During the second half of the first quarter, fourth graders were very busy. They went through the process of saving a Word document into their own network folder, something they never had before this year. It will be important for them to save work in the correct location so that it is accessible from any network computer. They will also be having some work in the cloud in their Google Drive accounts.
They used a Google Doc to write their personal narrative, and practiced using a footer, the tab key for indenting, centering text, and the spell check tool, among other things. They shared the document with Mrs. Smith so that she could comment on their writing. They also created a Google Doc with sentences about the story The Dot, by Peter H. Reynolds, which they viewed as a video. Those sentences were pasted into their blogs and with their own "dot" added to the post. Before uploading the image they learned about cropping images and cropped their own image which had been created in KidPix.
If you were with us last year you may recall my comments on grading in technology for third grade. I explained to fourth grade that for the first quarter of this year, they also will all receive a G for a technology grade. They are making an adjustment to many new things this year: Google Docs, their own network log on and their own network folder location, and much more use of digital tools. They will begin to receive scores on their work in the second quarter. The first score will be their Mark on the World post. The requirements for this assignment are listed on the webmix on the My Mark tile. It is everything that I will expect to see in the finished assignment. All of the completed posts can be found on the Mark on the World category link on the blog. (If a student post does not appear under that category it is either because they have not yet finished or because they did not check the box for the correct category before submitting the post!) Please leave comments. All students love to receive comments on their writing.
